Newman Lecture - Faith, Fact, and Fiction. The History of the Catholic Church (Copy)

  • Milam Auditorium 2520 Southwest Campus Way Corvallis, Oregon, 97331 United States (map)

OSU Newman’s 2026 Fall term Lecture will be presented by Dr. Christoper Baglow.

Dr. Chris Baglow leads the Science & Religion Initiative through creating programs, courses, talks, and publications that bring the Catholic faith and modern science into dialogue. His work is the culmination of 21 years of faith and science scholarship, publication and educational program creation, as well as a lengthy career in Catholic theological education spanning high-school, undergraduate, graduate and seminary teaching.

Dr. Baglow is the author of Faith, Science and Reason: Theology on the Cutting Edge (2nd edition, Midwest Theological Forum, 2019) and Creation: A Catholic’s Guide to God and the Universe (Ave Maria Press, 2021). More recently, he authored the transcripts for Wonder: The Harmony of Faith and Science, a Word on Fire film series directed by Manny Marquez and narrated by Jonathan Roumie.

How should believers understand the six-day creation account from a genuinely Catholic perspective that is open to modern scientific discoveries? Drawing from St. Thomas Aquinas, Vatican II and historical context reveals that only a symbolic reading best captures its divine and human meaning. Dr. Baglow will conclude with a consideration of St. Augustine's approach, whose careful reading of the ancient narrative not only doesn't conflict with modern science, but fits it hand-in-glove.

We are honored to have Dr. Christopher Baglow as our Fall term lecturer. The OSU Newman Lecture Series is free of cost with no registration required and open to all. Join us!
