OSU Newman’s 2025 Spring Term Lecture will be presented by Dr. Lawrence Principe.
Lawrence Principe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of the History of Science and Technology and the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on the the history of alchemy in the Medieval and early modern periods and the science-religion dynamic.
Dr. Principe will examine the common idea that the rise of modern science during the Scientific Revolution occurred alongside a decline in religious belief. He argues that this idea results from false 19th century narratives of an inherent conflict between science and religion as well as from a poorly-considered theological choice made during the Scientific Revolution itself. Religious motivations were actually an important driver of the scientific investigations of the period.
We are honored to have Dr. Principe as our Spring term lecturer. The OSU Newman Lecture Series is free of cost with no registration required and open to all. Join us!
